Daylight Savings Time Means Spring Cleaning is Here!

77741806Daylight Savings Time is here and that means more daylight and it also means a great time to tackle that spring cleaning and get organized.

Some of us are blessed with the gift of organization. Things seem to always be in the right place at the right time. Then there are those who just can’t seem to find a way to store all of the “stuff” we collect. Stacks and piles of books, papers, DVD’s and countless other objects seem to appear from nowhere throughout our homes.

So how do those of us not naturally gifted with the ability to put everything in its right place avoid building mountains of clutter? Well it’s truly easier than you think. Just follow the simple tips below and you should see instant results in reclaiming your space.

For starters conduct a general reworking of your storage spaces – such as closets, garages, attics, and basements. One thing to take note of is that people who are more organized generally do not have collections of useless materials.

Sure, it’s easy to attach meaning to various objects, but are you really going to ever get use out of them? The first step in getting organized must be to throw out or recycle all of the items that have essentially no practical use. If you absolutely can’t part with memorabilia then at least pack it up in a box so it can be stored easily.

After this, fully clear out the spaces you want to organize. Then, make a list of exactly what you need to store. This will help you design a better plan of attack when you put everything back into the space. If you want to upgrade a closet, garage, or any other space, check your local hardware store for organizational utilities, such as shelving, cabinets, and other organizing systems. You don’t have to engage an expensive professional to do it for you, simply knowing exactly how you desire to set up a space and asking an employee at the store should help you get the exact materials you need.

According to professionals, the key to proper organization is to use vertical space wisely. Especially in basements and garages, vertical space can often be used to hang a variety of objects (such as tools and sporting equipment), thus limiting the amount of clutter on floor space. Don’t be afraid to consider utilizing ceiling space for lighter storage.

For closets, keep your most worn clothing in easy-to-find locations, with a little open space for future purchases. Pack shoes and other clothing that is rarely used in stackable containers to remove clutter. As a general rule of thumb, give any clothes that you haven’t worn in the past 6 months away as charity donations.

In the end, proper organization is really about removing from your life the useless clutter that you collect. Doing this, and taking full advantage of all the space available to you (even if it means getting a little creative), will help you to recapture that lost sense of order in your home.
